Girolamo Russo is a prestigious wine estate on the northern slopes of Mount Etna in Sicily, specifically in the village of Passopisciaro. The winery is a cornerstone of the "Etna renaissance," known for producing elegant, terroir-driven wines from indigenous grapes.

Giuseppe was a trained concert pianist and held a Ph.D. in literature. He returned to his family's land after his father’s passing to preserve their legacy rather than sell the vineyards. To learn the craft, he trained with Etna pioneers like Frank CornelissenMarc de Grazia (Terre Nere), and Andrea Franchetti.

The estate manages approximately 15 to 18 hectares of vineyards situated between 650 and 800 meters above sea level. Many of the vines are over 80 to 100 years old.

  • Nose: Features drying mineral tones, blue flowers, and sweet almond nut. Some critics also note "old-fashioned" aromas of forest floor, game, leather, and black truffles.
  • Palate: The mouthfeel is polished and streamlined with silky tannins. It is often described as having a "sweet and sour" aromatic profile with a long, savory umami finish.
  • Structure: While the San Lorenzo vineyard typically produces Russo's most "muscular" and structured wines, the 2006 vintage is noted for being lean and elegant.

Grape: Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio
