Founded in 1987, Domaine Henri Magnien is a small family estate, with 6 hectares, located in Gevrey-Chambertin. After working side by side with his father Francois, Charles took over the domaine in 2012 and has taken the wines to new heights. He is one of the rising stars in Burgundy.
They have been using an old clone which is called Pinot Noir Magnien, aged between 70 to 100 years old, bringing unusual power and spiciness to the wines. The domaine has many of the very best vineyards, including Lavaux St-Jacques, Les Cazetiers and Ruchottes-Chambertin. In the past five years, they have converted 70-80% of their vineyards to organic viticulture.
Rating:
Ripe and fresh liqueur-like aromas speak of plum, black cherry, the sauvage and a hint of mentholated cherry cough. The seductively textured but impressively powerful larger-scaled flavors coat the palate with sappy dry extract that also serves to buffer the very firmly structured and balanced finish. This is muscular and serious and will require patience if you wish to see it at its peak. Note: from a large 1.47 ha holding with vines that run from the bottom to the top of the vineyard

The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers has turned out very well. Unwinding in the glass with notes of rose petals, peonies, red berries, orange rind and spices, it's medium to full-bodied, velvety and layered, with fine concentration and lively acids. Magnien produced 25 barrels out of the maximum of 32 authorized from his 1.47-hectare parcel.
